Nasturtium
Nasturtium (Annual)
Bright, bold and brilliantly easy to grow, Nasturtiums bring a splash of colour and a peppery kick to both garden and plate. Their vibrant red, orange and yellow flowers tumble across the ground or climb happily over supports, while both leaves and blooms add a delicious, spicy flavour to salads. A fantastic companion plant, they also help repel aphids and whitefly in the vegetable garden.
Planting
• Position: Grow in full sun for the best flowering, or partial shade for lush leaf growth.
• Soil: Prefers poorer, well-drained soil – too much fertility encourages leaves over flowers.
• Containers: Perfect for pots, hanging baskets and borders where they can trail freely.
Care
• Watering: Keep well watered until established, then water regularly in dry weather.
• Low Maintenance: No feeding required – too much feed reduces flowering.
• Support: Provide a trellis or canes for climbing varieties.
Height & Spread
30 – 40cm × 30 – 60cm
Harvesting
• Leaves & Flowers: Pick regularly, ideally in the morning for the freshest flavour.
• Encouragement: Frequent harvesting promotes more blooms throughout the season.
• Edible Bonus: Seeds can also be pickled and used like capers.
Top Tips
• Companion Planting: Grow near brassicas and tomatoes to deter pests.
• Poor Soil = More Flowers: Avoid rich compost for best results.
• Cut & Come Again: The more you pick, the more it flowers.
• Self-Seeding: Allow a few plants to set seed for next year’s display.
