Prinz Celeriac
(Also known as The Nutty Celery Root)
Don’t be fooled by its knobbly looks — Celeriac is a gourmet favourite! A close relative of celery, it has a mild, nutty, and slightly sweet flavour that’s perfect for mashing, roasting, or adding to soups and stews. Easy to grow and full of character, it develops smooth, round roots with creamy white flesh and great resistance to bolting. A true cool-season star for any kitchen garden!
Harvest
September to March.
Growing Instructions
-
Spacing: Plant 30cm apart in rows, with the crown level to the soil surface.
-
Positioning: Choose a sunny, fertile spot in well-drained soil.
-
Protection: Cover with fleece early on to boost growth and reduce the risk of bolting.
Top Tips
-
Crown Care: As plants mature, remove outer leaves as they fall to expose the crown — this helps it swell and develop nicely.
-
Side Shoots: Snip off any side shoots that appear to direct energy into the main root.
-
Moisture Matters: Keep soil evenly moist; dry spells can cause woody or split roots.
-
Harvest Hint: Wait for the first light frosts — they can actually improve flavour and sweetness.
-
Kitchen Tip: Peel thickly to reveal the smooth white flesh, then cube and roast for a rich, nutty side dish!
