We supply our vegetable and fruit plants in 4 sizes - Mini Plugs (also known as Micro Veg or seedlings), Medium Plugs, 9cm pots and 11cm pots.
Mini Plugs: -
These are intended for potting and growing on in a protected environment. Later in the season they can be grown on outdoors, to a more suitable size for planting in the garden. The plants are comparable to a large seedling; all will have their Cotyledons (Seed Leaves) out and the first 1½ to 2 true leaves growing. Ideally they should be planted into 9cm pots or similar to give them room to develop more roots and top growth. In the case of Brassicas and lettuce for example, they will be of a suitable size to plant out when they have 3 to 4 true leaves showing. Upon arrival the plants could be almost touching the top of the packaging, which is fine.
In the case of Leeks and Onions they may be supplied curled in the package due to their height. However, this doesn't damage or harm the plant they will straighten over a short time once removed.
Overall the plants will be around 8 - 9cm tall (with the exception of Leeks / Onions). The leaves may be yellowing slightly, this not a problem; we actually starve the plants of feed, to slow there growth; once potted on they will feed off the nutrients in your compost and begin to grow. This process reduces waste on our nursey and therefore is better for the environment.
Medium Plugs: -
These are intended to be planted straight away, providing the risk of frost has gone. Certain species can withstand frost like Broad beans and kale. Always check that the conditions are suitable. If not, you can transplant the medium plug into a larger container and grow on for when the weather is more suitable. These plugs will have at least 4 true leaves and possibly 5 or 6; do remember to harden off before planting in the garden, so they can adapt to their new environment. Do this in an area that is open but protected from harsh winds and extremes, an old cold frame with the top open will do fine or something similar. On arrival the plants will be around 9 -10cm tall.
9CM POTS: -
Our pots contain some of the more tender items such as, Cucumbers, Peppers and Tomatoes.
When they arrive some plants will be almost touching the top of the packaging or slightly lower; around 12 – 13cm tall. Some items; Courgette, Cucumber, Melon & Marrow will have the 2 seed leaves and possibly just 1 true leaf showing, as these plants are very quick to grow, even over 24 hrs.
Should you intend to grow them outdoors (suitable varieties are available) again wait until the Frosts have gone and harden (adapt to their new environment) them off before planting as for Medium plugs. For planting in the soil, grow bags or large pots; say around 30cm/ 10-15 litres.
PLEASE NOTE: ALL PLANTS SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM PACKAGING UPON ARRIVAL – DO NOT LEAVE PACKAGED - PLANTS NEED LIGHT AND AIR AS WELL AS WATER AND FOOD
Packaging - We feel strongly about the environment and all of our packaging is road side recyclable and we are constantly working hard to minimise our impact on the planet.
