A perennial herb, which has tall stems bearing single pink or purple flowers, with a central cone that is usually brown in colour. Rich in antioxidants its best known as an over the counter herbal remedy for the common cold and flu, although its can also be used to treat pain and inflammation. The flowers have a slightly sweet, floral taste and are perfect as edible garnishes, infused into syrups or tossed into salads to add colour and flavour.
Planting
Plant in beds or containers, in well-drained soil or compost, in full sun.
Care
Keep well watered until established,and in dry weather. Protect from slugs and snails.
Height & Spread:
60 – 90cm × 45 – 60cm.
Harvesting
Harvest flowers when they are in full bloom; the seeds are best harvested the following year when they are plump. Pull roots in the autumn.
