Description
Native to Japan, wasabi grows in wet areas along streams under large trees with plenty of shade. Wasabi will grow in the UK soil in a damp cool, shady spot in the garden, or even in a pot in your house. Its a great addition to your garden where plants dont normally do well in shady areas. A well-established plant will produce beautiful heart shaped leaves 60cm high and 1m wide.
Harvest
All parts of the plant are edible, leaves, stems and the flowers which can be picked in small amounts over the summer, then you can harvest the rhizomes around 18 months after planted. The longer you leave in the ground the stroner the taste will be.
Growing Instructions
Plant 50cm apart in well drained soil in a large pot or in the shadiest spot in the garden. keep well watered until established and make sure to keep damp at all times but not over wet or water logged. Wasabi will produce side shoots you can pull these and eat them or leave them to grow on. Leaves will die back over winter and will regrow the following year, Once winter comes the ground may need frost protection if the temperatures go below -5.
