Description
Unlike our other two varieties, this will crop the same year it is planted, hence the name 'Early purple'. It does not need a cool period (like the late ones do) so you can have delicious tender spears a lot earlier! However, the crop will be much smaller compared to our other two varieties. Santee produces good quality well coloured spears with good flavour and can be picked over a long period.
Harvest
June to November (when the spears are well formed but before the flower buds have opened, they may go through a mild winter)
Growing Instructions
Plant 60cm apart in a sheltered but sunny position in well drained soil. Keep well watered until established and in dry weather. Pick the central spear to encourage lots of side shoots.
Tip
Harvest as quickly as possible because the spears can quickly to flower heads, they do also freeze well.
