Peanuts
Peanuts (Annual)
Fun and unusual, peanuts—also known as groundnuts, earthnuts, or monkey nuts—are a conversation starter in any garden. Unlike most plants, their yellow flowers bloom above ground while their pods develop below the soil on runners that “peg” into the earth. Perfect for greenhouse growing or in the warmest areas of the UK, they’re a rewarding and quirky crop to try.
Harvest
• Timing: 120–150 days after planting, when the plants turn yellow and start to wilt.
• Method: Carefully dig up the whole plant, avoiding damage to the pods.
• Drying: Shake off excess soil and dry in a warm, ventilated spot for 1–2 weeks. Cut the pods from the runners and dry for an additional 2 weeks.
Growing Instructions
• Planting: Space 45cm apart in containers or directly in well-drained soil in a warm, sunny spot or greenhouse.
• Watering: Keep well watered until established and during dry weather.
• Managing Runners: Once you have plenty of runners, trim new ones to help existing pods grow bigger.
• Pre-Harvest Care: Reduce watering about 2 weeks before harvest to help the pods dry naturally.
Top Tips
• Warmth Matters: Peanuts thrive in heat—greenhouse conditions are ideal for UK growers.
• Soil Preparation: Light, sandy, well-drained soil encourages healthy pod development.
• Pest & Disease Watch: Keep an eye out for soil pests and fungal diseases; good ventilation helps prevent problems.
• Harvest Fun: Harvesting peanuts is a unique experience—dig carefully to avoid snapping the pods from the runners.
