Description
Peanuts also known as groundnuts, earthnuts, or monkey nuts, are not commonly grown in the UK, but can be grown in a greenhouse and warm areas of the country. They have an unusual habit of developing runners that grow into the ground and the pods develop in the soil, while the yellow flowers stay above the ground
Harvest
120-150 days after planting after the plants has turned yellow and started to wilt. Carefully dig up the hole plant, making sure not to damage any of the pods. Shake off any excess soil and place in a warm, dry, well-ventilated area to dry out for around 1-2 weeks. Carefully cut off the pods from their runners and then dry out once more for around 2 more weeks.
Growing Instructions
Plant 45cm apart in a container or direct into the ground in a warm sunny spot in your garden or preferably in the greenhouse. Water well until established especially in dry weather. Once you have plenty of runners you can now remove any new ones growing to help the existing pods grow bigger. You could stop watering the plants around 2 weeks before harvesting to help start the drying process.
