Description
Yes melons can be grown in the UK climate! They do need the added warmth of your greenhouse but the results are worth it. They can produce up to ten 15cm sized yellow and green striped melons per plant, with an amazing very sweet and aromatic taste, which leaves you wanting more.
Harvest
July to September. The melons will turn from a green colour to a yellow and may fall off its stem.
Growing Instructions
Melons prefer a warmer climate, in a greenhouse which is where you will get the best from your plant. It can be grown outside in warmer parts of the country but only producing a smaller number of fruits. Plant in a fairly sunny position in your greenhouse. Keep it sheltered if your planting outside, in well drained soil or growbag. Melons can be grown upwards like cucumbers with the fruit needing netted support, or they can be grown along the ground. Keep well watered until established and in dry periods. Melons do not like to be dry so it may help to have a drip feeder to keep the soil moist. But not soaking wet! Pollination- pick the male flowers and carefully place it in the female flower (the female flower has a swollen base under her flower) after two days you can remove the male flowers. Pick off any weak side shoots to let the goodness go to the right places. Only feed once the fruit has started to develop!
Tip
Melons prefer humid weather, pop a bucket of water in the greenhouse in the summer and try keeping the path wet. If you are getting towards the end of the season and there is a small melon forming, pick it off to let all the goodness go to remaining melons.
