A popular annual herb in the celery family, mainly grown for its feathery leaves, which have a mild aniseed like flavour. It also makes an attractive plant with flower stems up to 90cm tall, topped with delicate clusters of small yellow flowers. Best used fresh the leaves can be used to flavour a whole host of dishes, from fish, eggs, salads and soups to dips and potato dishes. The dried seeds can be used in pickles and vinegars and their flavour compliment seafood and breads.
Planting
Plant in beds or containers, in well-drained soil or compost, and in full sun.
Care
Keep well watered until established, and in dry weather. Protect from frost, slugs and snails. Will self seed in hot weather.
Height & Spread:
60 – 90cm × 30 – 40cm.
Harvesting
Snip leaves and flowers as required. Harvest in the morning, when the essential oils are most concentrated, and avoid taking morethan one-third of the plant at any one time. Harvest seeds in late summerwhen they turn brown.
