A feathery annual plant of the parsley family which can be used as an herb or a spice. Growing up to 50 cm tall, the leaves are variable in shape, broad at the base of the plant and slender and feathery higher on the flowering stems. The dried fruit and seeds are used to flavour many foods including curries and the delicate young leaves also known as cilantro are widely used in many Indian and Chinese dishes. The seeds are also known for their medicinal properties and are used in traditional home therapies for a variety of ailments.
Planting
Plant in beds or containers, in well-drained soil or compost, and in a lightly-shaded position.
Care
Keep well watered until established, and in dry weather. Protect from frost, slugs and snails.
Height & Spread:
45 – 60cm × 20 – 25cm.
Harvesting
Gently pick leaves as needed, ideally in the morning for peak flavour. Snip off the top
leaves and stems, being careful not to remove more than one-third of the plant at a time to encourage continuous growth.
