Native to Mexico and Guatemala, Chia is cultivated for its edible seed that is widely recognized as a nutrient dense addition to healthy diets. Growing up to 1.75 meters tall with purple or white flowers that are produced in numerous clusters in a spike at the end of each stem. Soak overnight to make a chia pudding breakfast, or serve them in porridge, pancakes and jams.

Planting
Plant in well-drained soil or compost, in full sun.

Care
Keep well watered until established, and in dry weather. Can go to seed easily. Protect from frost, slugs and snails.

Up to 1.75m × 40cm.

Harvesting
Harvest Chia seeds by cutting the flower heads when they are dry and letting them dry further indoors. Shake or brush the seeds out of the flower heads. It’s best to harvest in the late morning when moisture content is lowest. The health benefits of Chia are primarily in the seeds, not the leaves.
