A SUPERFOOD star, Chia is celebrated for its seeds, which are packed with Omega-3 fatty acids, protein, and fibre. A regular feature in health-conscious diets, it’s a versatile ingredient in smoothies, yoghurts, and baked goods.
Planting
Plant in well-drained soil or compost, in full sun.
Care
Keep well watered until established, and in dry weather. Can go to seed easily. Protect from frost, slugs and snails.
Height & Spread:
Up to 1.75m × 40cm.
Harvesting
Harvest Chia seeds by cutting the flower heads when they are dry and letting them dry further indoors. Shake or brush the seeds out of the flower heads. It’s best to harvest in the late morning when moisture content is lowest. The health benefits of Chia are primarily in the seeds, not the leaves.
